How Spanish negates

The basic rule is simple: put no immediately before the conjugated verb — or before the first verb in a compound tense:

✅ No entiendo. · ✅ No he comido. · ✅ No voy a salir.

Unlike English, Spanish allows and expects double negatives — No veo nada is correct and natural. Never translate “I don’t see anything” as No veo algo .

Double negatives — normal in Spanish

When a negative word ( nada, nadie, nunca, ningún, tampoco ) appears in the sentence, the verb still needs no :

✅ No veo nada . · ✅ No conozco a nadie . · ✅ Nunca no … → prefer No … nunca .
✅ No tengo ningún coche. · ✅ Tampoco no … → prefer No … tampoco or Yo tampoco .

❌ Veo nada · ❌ Conozco nadie · ❌ Tengo algún (in a negative sense).
