Small words, big meaning

These prepositions appear in almost every sentence. Many combine with el ( del , al ). Learn each with two example phrases , not isolated translations.

They connect nouns, verbs, and time expressions — mastering them unlocks most everyday Spanish.

de — of, from, about

Soy de España.I am from Spain.
Un vaso de agua.A glass of water.
Hablamos de ti.We talk about you.
Es el libro del profesor.It is the teacher's book.
Salgo de casa a las ocho.I leave home at eight.
¿De qué color es?What colour is it?

a — to, at (time)

Voy a la tienda.I am going to the shop.
A las ocho cenamos.We have dinner at eight.
Llamo a María.I call María. (personal a)
¿A qué hora llegáis?What time do you all arrive? (Spain)

Estoy en casa.I am at home.
En verano hace calor.In summer it is hot.
El libro está en la mesa.The book is on the table.

con & sin — with & without

Voy con mis amigos.I go with my friends.
Café con leche.Coffee with milk.
Hablo con el jefe.I speak with the boss.
Café sin azúcar.Coffee without sugar.
Salgo sin abrigo.I go out without a coat.
Sin problema.No problem. / Without a problem.

desde & hasta — from/since & until/up to

Vivo aquí desde 2019.I have lived here since 2019.
Desde aquí se ve la catedral.From here you can see the cathedral.
Trabajo desde las nueve.I work from nine o'clock.
Hasta mañana.See you tomorrow. / Until tomorrow.
Abierto hasta las diez.Open until ten.
Desde el lunes hasta el viernes.From Monday until Friday.
