Think backwards

Literally: “ To me it is pleasing.” The thing liked is the grammatical subject — so the verb agrees with it , not with “I”.

Me gusta el café (singular subject → gusta). Me gustan los libros (plural subject → gustan).

This feels backwards from English but is completely normal in Spanish.

The pattern

PersonPronoungustar (sing.)gustar (pl.)
to memeMe gustaMe gustan
to you (informal)teTe gustaTe gustan
to him/her/you (formal)leLe gustaLe gustan
to usnosNos gustaNos gustan
to you all (Spain)osOs gustaOs gustan
to them / you all (formal)lesLes gustaLes gustan
  • Me gusta el café.I like coffee.
  • Me gustan los libros.I like books.
  • ¿Os gusta Madrid?Do you all like Madrid? (Spain)
  • No me gusta nada.I don't like it at all.
  • ¿Te gustaría un café?Would you like a coffee?
  • A María le gustan las películas de terror.María likes horror films.

With infinitives and activities

Me gusta + infinitive : the activity acts as a singular subject.

Me gusta leer . Me gusta bailar . Me gusta cocinar .

  • Me gusta leer antes de dormir.I like reading before sleep.
  • ¿Os gusta viajar?Do you all like travelling?
  • No nos gusta madrugar. We do not like getting up early.

encantar — to love (things)

Encantar is stronger than gustar — “to love” or “to adore” (things and activities, not people romantically). Same grammar pattern.

  • Me encanta la paella.I love paella.
  • Me encantan los domingos tranquilos.I love quiet Sundays.
  • ¿Te encanta cocinar?Do you love cooking?
  • Os encanta el fútbol, ¿verdad? You all love football, right?
  • A mi madre le encanta bailar flamenco. My mother loves dancing flamenco.
  • Nos encanta pasar tiempo en la playa. We love spending time at the beach.
  • Les encantan las series españolas. They love Spanish TV series.

interesar — to interest

Interesar follows the same structure: the topic is the subject.

  • Me interesa la historia de España.Spanish history interests me.
  • Me interesan los idiomas.Languages interest me.
  • ¿Te interesa el puesto de trabajo? Are you interested in the job?
  • No nos interesa la política.Politics does not interest us.
  • ¿Os interesa venir el sábado? Are you all interested in coming on Saturday?
  • A Pablo le interesa mucho la tecnología.Technology interests Pablo a lot.
