Both describe the past — different jobs

Native speakers choose by aspect , not by mirroring English. Imperfecto = frame, habit, description, ongoing background. Pretérito = a finished event that moves the story forward.

Think of a film: imperfecto is the wide shot (weather, mood, what was happening); pretérito is the cut to what happened next .

Side by side — and the timeline

Imperfecto paints the background; pretérito marks finished events on the line
