Location vs movement

Spanish separates where something is (location → estar + preposition) from where something is going (movement → verbs like ir + a ). Mixing them is one of the most common learner mistakes.

Location questions: ¿Dónde está…? / ¿Dónde estáis? (Spain)
Movement questions: ¿Adónde vas? / ¿Adónde vais? (Spain)

  • ¿Dónde está el baño?Where is the bathroom?
  • Estoy en casa.I am at home.
  • ¿Adónde vais este fin de semana?Where are you all going this weekend? (Spain)
  • Madrid está en España.Madrid is in Spain.
  • El gato está debajo de la cama. The cat is under the bed.
  • Estamos cerca de la estación.We are near the station.

estar + en — the default location pattern

For physical location of people, objects, and cities, use estar (not ser ) + en :

en = in, at, on (general location)
en casa = at home · en el trabajo = at work · en la playa = at the beach · en Madrid = in Madrid

Estar is temporary/state; ser is identity/origin. Location is always estar .

  • Estoy en la oficina.I am at the office.
  • ¿Dónde estáis? — Estamos en el parque.Where are you all? — We are in the park. (Spain)
  • El restaurante está en la calle Mayor. The restaurant is on Mayor Street.
  • Mis padres están en el pueblo. My parents are in the village.
  • ¿Está María en casa?Is María at home?
  • Los libros están en la estantería.The books are on the bookshelf.
