Why this matters

You will need time expressions every day: meeting friends, catching a train, booking a table, talking about your routine. Spanish tells the time with es la / son las (not a single “it is” like English). Dates use el + number + de + month — day and month are not capitalised.

What time is it?

The golden rule — learn this first:

• Minutes past the hour use y and name the current hour: Es la una y veinte · Son las tres y media .
• Minutes to the next hour use menos and name the next hour: Son las dos menos cuarto (1:45) · Son las cuatro menos diez (3:50).
• Exact / past with 1 → Es la una… ; with 2–12 → Son las… . With menos , agreement follows the hour you name after menos (often not “1”).

❌ Es las una · ❌ Son la dos · ❌ Es la una menos cuarto (that would be ~12:45).
✅ 1:45 = Es la una y cuarenta y cinco or Son las dos menos cuarto.

Son las tres y cuarto — hour hand between 3 and 4, minute hand on 3

24-hour clock (Spain)

In Spain the 24-hour clock is common on timetables, news, and official notices. Say Son las + hour + horas (often drop horas in speech). Minutes follow the same y / menos rules.

At what time — appointments

For schedules and appointments use a la (1:00) or a las (all other times) + time.

✅ A la una · ✅ A la una y media · ✅ A las dos · ✅ A las ocho y cuarto
❌ en las ocho → ✅ a las ocho

The same a la / a las rule applies in the 24-hour system: a las diecinueve .

  • A la una.At one (o’clock).
  • A la una y media.At half past one.
  • A las dos.At two (o’clock).
  • A las ocho.At eight (o’clock).
  • Quedamos a las ocho. We're meeting at eight. (Spain — *quedar* = to meet up)
  • El tren sale a las nueve y veinte. The train leaves at nine twenty.
  • La película empieza a las diez menos cuarto. The film starts at quarter to ten.
  • ¿A qué hora empezáis?What time do you all start? (Spain)
  • Tengo cita a la una.I have an appointment at one.

Parts of the day

Two patterns that look similar but do different jobs:

• por la… = during that part of the day (habits, activities)
• de la… = attached to a clock time (which eight o’clock?)

domingoSunday

On a day (one time): el + day → El lunes voy al médico.
Every that day: los + day → Los lunes trabajo desde casa.
